Secondary School Cycle 1 Recap

UWI Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business hosted a 4 month business simulation competition with  80+ examination students from 17 secondary schools during the period January –  April 2023.

After eight rounds of competition the winning schools were awarded at the Business School’s Mt. Hope Campus on April 14th, 2023 by Nisa Suepaul, Curriculum Coordinator Ag., Ministry of Education; Mariano Browne, CEO of Lok Jack GSB, Dr. Ron Sookram, Academic Director of Lok Jack GSB and Dr. Miguel Dindial, Programme Lead of the Bachelor of International Business.

The 5 member teams made weekly business decisions based on the context and competitor actions in their assigned universe. There were three universes to allow the students to compete with each in their allocated market.

The objective of the simulation competition is to assist students in applying their business knowledge, to help them better understand the concepts being taught as part of the CXC Syllabus. The students from the top three teams won partial scholarships for the Bachelor of International Business at the Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business and the opportunity to interact with alumni for career guidance.

Lok Jack GSB Academic Director, Dr. Ron Sookram said, “Through this simulation students are given a holistic experience into the world of business richly complementing what they cover in the classroom”.

Naparima College won the competition and $120,000 in Scholarships for the team members for the Bachelor of International Business.  The second place winners, St. Anthony’s College won $90,000 in scholarships, while the third place winners received $60,000 in scholarships.

The teachers of the winning schools also granted access to a professional development course at the Business School, and all participating students received a $6,000 tuition discount towards the Bachelor programme at Lok Jack GSB.

More than $690,000 in Scholarships have been made available to the participants of the Secondary School Business Simulation Competition.

Congratulations to the winning team!  We look forward to the next cycle of the business simulation competition in October 2023.

First Round of Cuts

“The marketplace in which an organisation operates within is dynamic and ever changing. While these words are often spoken in the classroom, the ALJGSB simulation was able to bring it to life.

Teams initially approached the simulation with a somewhat insular approach. In other words, they were focused on matching their strategic goals with company’s resources base. As the simulation progressed, they saw first had that the efficacy of an organisation’s strategy also depends on dynamic factors that residing outside the organisation. For instance, we saw teams making a more conscious efforts to understand and predict their competitive landscape – and to incorporate these predictions into their decision making process.

This is a very significant learning outcome, and one that will reshape how these young students perceive business strategy.”
